When and Where
August 21, 2005
Paradise Cove, Oahu, Hawaii

We wanted to do one really typical tourist thing while in Hawaii — a luau was top on the list of things to do. It was also one of the cheaper things to do.
Getting reservations for the event was a painful undertaking. Advice of the Day: Make your reservations online before you arrive in Hawaii.

Upon arrival to the luau, we were left on our own to go to the several events and exhibitions that were taking place, shops — and most importantly — the bar. Here you see a lei making class. We found the bar and are relaxing!
Kayaking is an art, and here we see some learning how to operate these testy boats. Hula lessons are offered. Hmmm …
Hawaiian bowling anyone? I get my rock between the posts perfect — but do I get my odd-shaped stick there too?
Tony throws a spear. So do I. It looked so easy too … The spears were light enough to hold, but when thrown they were much heavier than expected!
"Oh we're going … to a Hukilau … Huki-Huki-Huki-Huki-Huki-Hukilau … We'll throw our nets … out into the sea …" Okay, so we let the hunky native cousins throw the nets in …
Here some of our half-naked cousins in grass skirts arrive to help with the Hukilau. They must do the sacred dances to call the spirits for a good catch …
More sacred dances …
And more sacred dances, followed by prayer — and the ritual of shaking behinds to your cousin tribe … Kind of an island "neener-neener."
Now for the part we are waiting for — the Ima Cermony — or the raising of the pig that's been roasting nicely in the underground oven. First the ali'i, or royalty arrive to oversee the ceremony while beautiful girls dance.
After a bit more hip swinging, the men arrive to lift the pig from the Ima.
Sunset at Paradise Cove. Ahhhhhhhhh …
While we partake of the meal, we watch our cousins perform various Polynesian dances. First up, the Hawaiian dances …
"Aloha Oe … aloha oe …" Look! The queen arrives …
Next we get mesmerized by the fascinating Samoan dancers, especially that of King Fua, the fire dancer.
The island of Tahiti provides for some spectacular dances.
Hmmmmm … We have some strange looking cousins on stage.
Can you tell this dancer was the highlight of the night? Suddenly, the men who had been sleeping most of the show were wide awake …
Hanging out with the royalty — the Ali'i .
Ben the bear recuperating from the luau. He, of course, attended a luau strictly for bears. We hear it was pretty wild.
